What to expect

This is not about stopping yet. In deep relaxation you explore what the cigarette really gives you: relief, calm, a moment of aliveness. And then you experience, in your own body, that this feeling is available without smoking. You listen in the evening, sitting or lying down, and may still be smoking. The decision comes later, in Part Two, and only when you are ready.

Why it starts with a feeling, not a decision

Most attempts to stop smoking are built on fighting: you want the cigarette and try not to want it. That works for a while, and then it gets tiring. This audio takes your wish to smoke seriously and starts one step earlier, with the need behind the cigarette. Once that need has another route, the decision has something to stand on. More on this in the guide: why willpower is rarely enough to quit smoking. Here is how the audio begins:

“Your wish to smoke is completely legitimate. When you smoke, you are giving yourself a feeling that you long for. So this is not about taking something away from you, and it is not about rules or bans. It is about finding out what you are really reaching for when you reach for a cigarette.”
